The venue is booked. You’ve set the date and time, and maybe you’ve already lined up your photographer and music. Things are coming together for your big day!

But there’s one very important detail left:

Who will officiate your wedding ceremony?

It may seem like a simple choice, but your Officiant plays a crucial role—not just in the logistics of the day, but in setting the tone, telling your story, and guiding you through one of life’s most meaningful moments.

The ceremony isn’t just a formality before the party—it’s the beginning of your next chapter. It should reflect your personalities, your love, and your values.

So, what should you look for when choosing an Officiant? We’re glad you asked…

1. Flexibility

Your ceremony should be a reflection of your relationship and your unique story. Look for an Officiant who is flexible and willing to work with you—someone who empowers you to choose every word spoken on your day. This is your ceremony, not theirs. Your Officiant should help bring your vision to life, not fit your story into a script.

2. Personable

It might sound simple, but personality matters. You want someone who feels like a friend—without the pressure of asking a friend to officiate!

A great Officiant is warm, approachable, and able to create a relaxed atmosphere. They’ll know how to handle the unexpected (like a microphone failure) and keep everything flowing with calm professionalism. Ask yourself: “When I see this person on my wedding day, will I feel calm… or stressed?”

3. Detail-Oriented

While an Officiant isn’t a wedding planner, they should be aware of what’s happening around them and have an eye for detail.

Great Officiants notice the little things—like a walker left in the aisle that might clutter your photos—and step in thoughtfully, even when it’s not technically their job. When meeting with potential Officiants, listen for their awareness of ceremony flow, photo moments, and guest experience. Attention to detail speaks volumes.

4. Punctual

Being on time isn’t optional—it’s essential. Did they arrive early for your first meeting? That’s a strong indicator of what you can expect on your wedding day.

Ask how far in advance they typically arrive at the venue. With venues running tight schedules, you want to be absolutely sure your Officiant is present, prepared, and on time.

5. Credibility

What are others saying about them? Do their reviews speak to their professionalism, warmth, and ability to connect?

The best testimonials mention that it felt like being married by a friend. That connection is gold.

Also, make sure your Officiant is legally registered to officiate marriages in your province. Most governing bodies offer public lists—don’t be afraid to check.

6. Knowledgeable

A knowledgeable Officiant understands not just the ceremony structure, but also the venue logistics, cultural traditions, and legal requirements.

Have they officiated at your venue before—or taken the time to learn about the space? Do they know about different ceremony elements like a ring warming, family rose presentation, or love letter ceremony?

After the “I do’s,” your Officiant should also be confident in handling the legal paperwork—filing your marriage license correctly and promptly.
