If you think you can’t offer your wedding guests a menu that is both completely gluten-free and downright delicious, think again!

For a number of reasons, including food sensitivities and life-style choice, many couples are seeking alternatives to the traditional wedding menu options.

There is no doubt that the additional challenge to accommodate various guests food challenges and preferences (be it gluten-free or vegan) can be difficult, but the food options and menu possibilities are almost endless.

If you’re up to the challenge, here are a few ideas for creating a gluten-free wedding reception that will not disappoint – from a food perspective at least:

1)    When choosing your venue/caterer ask if they offer a gluten-free menu and talk about examples of possible gluten-free entrees. Discuss your expectations for the menu and, if you are committed to a 100 percent gluten-free wedding, let the venue know that up front.

2)    Ask questions like, “Do you check your ingredients – even the sauces – to see if they are gluten-free?” or “How do you prevent cross-contamination?” or “Do you have a separate area or day of the week when you prepare your gluten-free food?” If you want your reception to be 100% gluten-free these are questions you should be asking.

3)    Keep in mind the time of the year that you are getting married, as the best wedding menus take into consideration the season. They feature beets, parsnips, asparagus and rhubarb in the spring; broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries and raspberries in the summer; tomatoes, peppers, corn, and blueberries in the fall, and squash, potatoes, yams, and pears in the winter.

4)    Be flexible. If your vendor/caterer is not able to replicate your “perfect entrée”, be open to their suggestions – their recommendations may be even better than you had envisioned.

Let your gluten-free menu reflect your lifestyle, showcase your commitment to health and wellness and highlight how tasty gluten-free food really is. After all, everyone loves great food!
