Choose Your Own Adventure

Authored by: Amber Shurr Enduring Promises

Our memories are best captivated not by the mundane or monotonous, but by the moments in which we are both surprised by the unexpected and yet feel the most alive in our own skin. Life was never meant to be lived by a template but rather to be a story, adventured as we wake up each day to write a new page. There are people and things that we connect to on our individual journey that shape us and attach to us, they become a part of us and are played out in everyday moments as well as our major life events. Just as fashion is never a “one size fits all” neither should your life be. This is especially true of the monumental moments such as your wedding day.

“Our lives are stories, and the stories we have to give to each other are the most important. No one has a story too small and all are of equal stature. We each tell them in different ways, through different mediums—and if we care about each other, we’ll take the time to listen.” Charles de Lint

Whether your love story is connected to a “Tale as old as time..” Beauty & The Beast or “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” Star Wars  Many of us find pieces of ourselves in the characters of our favourite books, movies, or pop-cultural trends. We express invitation to others to get to know us through fashion and what we choose to celebrate. Oftentimes, these are the things that draw us together and how much more when it comes to choosing a life partner.

What could be more authentic and memorable than your wedding day built around these influences. Your wedding day marks the beginning of a brand new family unit, distinctively, who you are as a couple. You are taking the time to individualize the location, the guest list, the decor, the music, the food and drink, why should your ceremony stand in stark contrast to the rest of the day?

Your wedding day is a big moment in your lives and love story. By adding a theme to your wedding you are solidifying the moment in the memories of your guests. In the book “The Power of Moments” by Chip & Dan Heath, the authors outline how to do this.

“Defining moments are created from one or more of the following four elements:

  • Elevation: Transcend the normal course of events, be extraordinary, surprise
  • Insight: Rewire our understanding of ourselves or the world
  • Pride: Moments that capture us at our best — achievement, courage
  • Connection: Shared with others”

Your wedding day is a defining moment so why not add a touch of whimsy or even colour over every element with your theme?

“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.” “I love you,” he whispered, and kissed my brow. “Thorns and all.” “I threw myself into that fire, threw myself into it, into him, and let myself burn.”

“[The ring] means that you have me, that I’m yours. It means, ‘Come live your life with me.’ The only thing I ask is that you outlive me so that I never have to live another day without you.”  or

“You had me at hello” – Jerry Maguire,

“No matter what happens to us, everyday spent with you is the best day of my life.” –The Notebook or even

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” –Winnie the Pooh.
